Mai Chau Destination
Approximately 150km from Hanoi, about three hours by bus, in recent
years, Mai Chau valley and his Thai ethnic culture and architecture has
become a popular tourist destination. Vietnam's Mai Chau is a large
valley, to Mai Chau tourist will have chance to see a verdant landscape,
Thai-style thatched huts, meandering streams in the rice field.
Mai Chau is located in Hoa Binh, a mountainous province in the northwest
of Hanoi. The way to village is a longish journey, but it's compensated
you will have chance to join by panoramic views over the hills and
valleys. The White Thai peoples have occupied Mai Chau valley for
several hundred years. Most of the Mai Chau village's residents are from
the White Tai ethnic group and live in the stilt houses. Beneath the
stilt houses, families keep their livestock and their looms.
Traditionally, their income was generated by rice production and weaving
scarves.
A typical
tour spends one night in Mai Chau with music from traditional gongs
accompanied by Thai dances, eating steamed 'sticky' rice and drinking
local rice 'wine' through bamboo 'straws' from a communal jar. For a
longer trip, you should hiking through the rice paddies and nearby
villages and a visit to the Song Da by jeep. Accommodation will be in a
stilt house homestay, after a couple of days you'll have an experiencing
the genuine hill tribe lifestyle!
